The Nature Centre was established in 1995. At the centre, visitors can look at various kind of  organisms from the Icelandic nature and living animals in seawater tanks.

Small sea creatures from the bottom of the sea or the nearby pond can be observed through  bioncular mircoscopes.


The staff of the Nature Centre organize field work for students in elementary schools. Among the most popular are going to the shore or the pond and gather samples of living creatures and plants, bring them into the centre where they can study them by the help of teachers, staff and the great variety of books on the subject found there.  The history of the community Sandgerði accesable in written material at the centre and  staff members will give guidance through the village upon request.

At the centre, there are also facilities and accommodation for scientists doing research in connection with the BIOICE project, located in the same building.Now, the Nature Centre is housing an exhibition about the research and life of the famous French explorer and marine biologist Jean-Baptiste Charcot. He and his crew perished in his ship the Pourquoi Pas in a great seastorm on the coast of Iceland in 1936.

The museum is an ideal place for curious tourists and parents with children thirsting for knowledge.
