Reykjanes is one of the Top10 best under-the-radar Romantic Destinations

Reykjanes is one of the Top10 best under-the-radar Romantic Destinations
Love is... watching the sunset in Gardur

USA TODAY expert panel selected Reykjanes as a contender for "Best Under-the-Radar Romantic Destination", which was launched in July. The contest, which is being promoted by USA TODAY, gave voters four weeks to vote for the candidate of their choice.

The winners were announced this weekend and Reykajnes peninsula was voted #5. Here you can see the results of the voting.

The review from the expert panel says this about Reykjanes: Locatedbetween Keflavík International Airport and Reykjavík, Iceland's Reykjanes (meaning Smoky Point) Peninsula is home not only to the Blue Lagoon, but to other interesting sites - many based around active volcanoes. Mineral lakes, bubbling hot springs, coastal lava fields form part of the untamed landscape, drawing adventure seekers from around the world. Other activities include whale watching, ATV tours and helicopter flights over the otherworldly terrain.  One of the area highlights is Valahnúkur, a mystical stretch of coastline where adventurers can scale the grassy banks and peer over the volcanic cliffs, where thousands of birds can be seen bobbing around in the ocean. Winds are treacherous in this area and care should be taken around the cliff edges.

The Reykjanes Peninsula

Towns & Villages

Visitors to Iceland who arrive via Keflavik International Airport on the Reykjanes Peninsula may be somewhat surprised by the landscape that greets their eyes as they touch down in Iceland for the very first time. A seemingly endless, green-grey moss-topped lava field blankets the peninsula for as far as the eye can see, and it is this strange and rather other-worldly sight that is your first glimpse of the land of fire and ice.
