Evacuation Sirens in Svartsengi and Grindavík
Due to ongoing volcanic activity and changing conditions on the Reykjanes Peninsula, evacuation sirens have been installed in Svartsengi, near the Blue lagoon and Norhern lights Inn and in the town of Grindavík.
📢 When do the sirens go off?
The sirens are activated when an eruption is considered imminent and an evacuation is necessary. The sound is loud, continuous, and unmistakable – a clear signal to evacuate the area immediately, following the instructions of Civil Protection.
🛠️ Regular tests – no evacuation needed
The sirens are tested on the last Wednesday of every month at 11:00 AM. During the test, the sirens will sound for a few minutes, but there is no need to evacuate. The tests ensure that the system is fully functional in case of an emergency.
Next testing time is 27th of August 2025 at 11.00AM
