Winter has arrived, and the first snow has fallen in the mountains on the Reykjanes Peninsula. Conditions on the hiking trails at Mt. Fagradalsfjall and towards the Sundhnúksgígar craters can change rapidly, and it is essential to follow all safety guidelines.

All hiking routes are currently open, and the trails are not serviced during winter. Snow, ice, and reduced visibility call for extra preparation and caution:

  • Dress in warm, waterproof clothing and wear sturdy footwear.
  • Check the weather forecast before you set out.
  • Stay on marked trails only.
  • Never walk on new lava.

If conditions are poor or visibility is low, we recommend postponing your hike. Conditions can change quickly during the winter months.
