Updated January 8th: Uncertainty level has been lifted and the area is safe to visit.

Earthquakes have started again in the Reykjanes peninsula similar to the present events before the eruption in Mt. Fagradalsfjall last March.

In the past week, earthquakes have occurred in the area and the Icelandic MET office has noticed increased seismic activity at the same time. For that reason the Civil Protection Department and the Police Commissioner in Suðurnes have sent out this announcement:

Announcement of activation of SMS messages due to the earthquake swarm in Reykjanes

The Civil Protection Department and the Police Commissioner in Suðurnes have decided to activate SMS messages that will be sent to people who enter a pre-defined area due to the earthquakes that have started again at Fagradalsfjall in Reykjanes. That is because an eruption could start at short notice. In the event of an eruption, the text messages will become a direct warning to people in the area in question. It can not be ruled out that the SMS message is sent to people somewhat outside the defined area, and the public is therefore asked to keep that in mind. The Police Commissioner in Suðurnes warns people not to go hiking around the eruption site during this uncertainty.

The announcement is in English, Icelandic and Polish.
