Earthquakes temporarily halt operation of tourism companies in the Svartsengi area

Due to the increased seismic activities and strong earthquake swarms affecting the Svartsengi area, tourism operators have ceased operation until 16th of November.

Tourism operators located near Mt. Þorbjörn, in the Svartsengi area, have decided to cease their operations until the 16th of November. The decision will be revised at that time or until further notice.

The closure affects the restaurants of Max's, Lava and Moss; the hotels of Northern Light Inn, Silica and the Retreat, the Blue Lagoon Spa and Retreat Spa as well as the treatment centre at Silica Hotel. For more information and current updates, please visit their websites.

Road no. 462 closed

Following the suspension of service, road no 462 (Norðurljósavegur) has been closed off to traffic. The Local Police authorities have taken the measures due to increased earthquakes and reduced service in the area. The road closure is at the crossroads by road no. 43 (Grindavíkurvegur) and by road no. 425 (Nesvegur).

Due to the road closure, access to the geosite Elvörp has also been closed.
