Green Footprint: Partners develop responsible travel resources in Rome

Green Footprint partners met in Rome on 7–8 September to review new educational videos and plan the next stages of the project, which encourages young travellers to make a positive contribution to the places they visit.

Green Footprint is an Erasmus+ project led by Visit Reykjanes, with partners from Galileo in Italy, Lanzarote and Chinijo Islands UNESCO Global Geopark in Spain, and GeoCamp Iceland. Running until July 2027, the project supports young travellers, educators and travel organisers in understanding the impact of tourism on nature and local communities.

The Rome meeting was the partners’ second in-person gathering, following the project’s launch in Lanzarote in March. Partners reviewed educational videos developed in English, Italian and Spanish, planned an Icelandic version and discussed ideas for new clips from the participating countries.

The videos are designed to help young people make informed travel choices and show greater consideration for nature and local communities. Partners also laid the groundwork for a practical educator’s guide and shared initial ideas for an online training programme.

During their visit, partners explored the Ostia Antica Archaeological Park. Director Alessandro D’Alessio welcomed the group and reaffirmed the park’s intention to participate in the project.

Responsible travel is particularly relevant to Reykjanes, where fragile nature and distinctive geological landscapes require care. Through accessible educational resources, Green Footprint aims to help travellers understand their impact and contribute positively to the destinations they visit.

The project’s final partner meeting will take place in Iceland in 2027.
