Reykjanes Geopark attends EGN conference in Finland

Representatives of Reykjanes Geopark attended the EGN conference in Finland in September, presenting projects on education, the 2026 total solar eclipse, regenerative tourism and the community in Grindavík. GeoCamp and Katla Geopark were also represented among the participants from Iceland.

Representatives of Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark attended the European Geoparks Network (EGN) conference in Saimaa, Finland, from 16 to 18 September. The event brought together representatives from geoparks across Europe to share knowledge, present projects and strengthen cooperation. Participants from Iceland also included representatives of GeoCamp and Katla Geopark.

Reykjanes contributed to several sessions covering education and school partnerships, community engagement around the 2026 total solar eclipse, regenerative tourism, and community and business resilience in Grindavík.

Sigrún Svafa Ólafsdóttir presented a regional model for building a UNESCO school network through a geopark. She also led the Ripples of Knowledge workshop on outdoor learning and knowledge sharing between geoparks. Þuríður H. Aradóttir Braun spoke about the eclipse in Reykjanes, the REGENERATE and Green Footprint projects, and collective action in Grindavík. Arnbjörn Ólafsson of GeoCamp presented From Field Sites to Professional Learning, while Sigurður Sigursveinsson of Katla Geopark introduced the Eyjafjallajökull Geological Path.

The conference offered an opportunity to share experiences from Iceland and bring home new ideas from fellow geoparks.
