Reykjanes Knitters Join Visit Iceland's New AI Knittakers Campaign
The campaign, AI Knittakers – Authentic Icelandic Knittakers, takes a playful approach to modern meeting culture and the growing use of artificial intelligence to record and summarise meetings.
Instead of relying on an AI notetaker, participants can book a real Icelandic knitter to attend an online meeting on their behalf. The knitter listens, observes and captures the essence of the meeting by knitting a single word using Icelandic wool.
The idea is simple: time is valuable, and perhaps it is better spent enjoying life, connecting with others and exploring new places. Iceland offers the perfect opportunity to slow down and make time for what matters.
Meet the Reykjanes Knittakers
Nearly 30 knitters from across Iceland are participating in the campaign, including three women from the Reykjanes Peninsula:
- Marta Karlsdóttir, of Prjónasystur, with strong roots in the town of Grindavík.
- Hrafnhildur Stígsdóttir, from Reykjanesbær, who has been knitting since her teenage years and enjoys the creativity and mindfulness of the craft.
- Rannveig Lilja Garðarsdóttir (Nanný), from Njarðvík, who has been knitting for 60 years and describes knitting as both a creative activity and a form of meditation.
Each knitter attends scheduled online meetings and creates a knitted word reflecting the essence of the conversation. The service is free and can be booked through the official campaign website.
Local Craft, Wellbeing and the Reykjanes Experience
Visit Reykjanes has supported the campaign in cooperation with Business Iceland, helping to identify local knitters and coordinate preparations. The wool used by the knitters has been sourced through Stapafell in Keflavík.
The campaign also reflects the growing interest in wellbeing, meaningful experiences and taking time to reconnect with nature.
Knitting has long been part of Icelandic cultural heritage. Beyond its practical and creative value, it offers a way to slow down, focus on the present and enjoy a moment of calm.
Visitors to Reykjanes can discover this same sense of wellbeing through geothermal bathing, local swimming pools, coastal walks, volcanic landscapes and authentic encounters with local communities.
A Global Invitation to Experience Iceland
The campaign primarily targets audiences in the United Kingdom and the United States, using humour, creativity and Icelandic traditions to inspire future travel.
Although the bookable knitting sessions conclude on 20 November, the campaign content will continue to showcase Iceland and its people beyond the initial launch period.
