Increased geothermal activity in Gunnuhver

Increased geothermal activity in Gunnuhver
One of the platforms by Gunnuhver geothermal pool

In the last few days there has been an increased activity in the geothermal pool of Gunnuhver on the Reykjanes peninsula. For this reason the authorities have decided to close one of the two viewing platforms in the area. The second platform is still open and has a good view overlooking the geothermal area. We will post information when the platform is reopened.

This gives you an indication of the vibrancy and fluctuation of an island under constant development and the awesome natural forces on the boundaries of two tectonic plates. It also shows that you need to be careful when you visit geothermal areas.

Updated: The platforms are both open.

The Reykjanes Peninsula

Towns & Villages

Visitors to Iceland who arrive via Keflavik International Airport on the Reykjanes Peninsula may be somewhat surprised by the landscape that greets their eyes as they touch down in Iceland for the very first time. A seemingly endless, green-grey moss-topped lava field blankets the peninsula for as far as the eye can see, and it is this strange and rather other-worldly sight that is your first glimpse of the land of fire and ice.
